Avallon aurait été une bourgade d'importance, au sein d'une contrée déjà largement occupée par des nations Celtiques, ceci durant le millénaire qui précède l'ère chrétienn. Puis elle fut une ville d'étape importante sur la voie Romaine Agrippa qui liait la méditerranée au nord de l'Europe.A l'origine, ceinte de remparts en bois, puis en pierre, elle fut fortifiée au cours des âges contre les multiples invasions sur un éperon granitique qui domine de 100 mètres la vallée du cousin.
